My paintings are landscapes, which
were inspired by cycling in the Scottish Highlands and walking in Brecon, South
Wales. They are traditional oil paintings, which acknowledge a contemporary
urban view of nature. This is manifest in the use of rectangles, or windows
within the pictures surface, which are painted with a different focus, or rendered
with different handling of material. These windows are designed to reflect the
elemental changes characteristic of the subject, whilst also recognising nature’s
inaccessibility, despite its proximity. They are both a view of, and a barrier
to the true experience of being in such an environment, loaded with romanticism,
and folkloric grandeur.
